Does your dog or cat have weepy, watery, gunky eyes?

If so, this can be an indication of serious eye problems. One explanation can be allergies, but there are common eye problems dogs and cats share that need medical care. Here is a list of possible eye problems and their symptoms.

Conjunctivitis- This condition is an inflammation of the membrane that covers the inner lining of the eye and the white of the eye. Causes for this problem are, infections, allergies, or inadequate tear production.

Dry Eye- This occurs when a dogs tear glands can not produce enough tears. Causes include allergies, viral diseases, injuries, or drug reactions. This condition can become chronic, in which case it can cause loss of vision. Some dog breeds are predisposed to this condition.

Corneal Ulceration- This problem occurs when the cornea's surface is scratched, or changed by inadequate tear production, or bacterial infection. This condition is very painful, and can cause your dog to squint. Aging dogs seem to be prone to this condition.

Epiphora- If your dog's eyes constantly weep, or the fur around the eye is stained the tear flow is blocked.

Cataracts and Glaucoma- Yes, just like humans, dogs and cats are prone to these eye diseases. Cataracts cloud the lens inside the eye, and, are the most common cause of canine blindness. Glaucoma is a result of too much pressure exerted on the eyes interior as a result in the decrease of fluid draining from it.

Cats are susceptible to these eye diseases as well. If you suspect your pet has one of these problems or you want more information visit your local veterinarian. The veterinarian can administer some tests to determine the problem and the best course for treating it. Remember, keeping your pets Happy and Healthy gives them more years to share your love.
